From 1950s Printing Presses to 3D Printing: A Family Dream of Having Our Own Business

Our Story | Indigo Inkworks
From One Generation of Printing to the Next
Some businesses begin with a business plan. Others begin with a dream. Indigo Inkworks began with a little of both, and a whole lot of family.

My name is Andrew. For more than 20 years, I worked as a press operator running four-color web printing presses built in the 1950s. These were massive mechanical machines from another era, when craftsmanship, precision, patience, and experience mattered. I loved the work, but I could see the writing on the wall. Traditional printing was becoming a dying industry, and I knew I needed to plan for what came next. To me, though, printing is printing. Whether it's ink on paper or plastic built layer by layer, the heart of the work is much the same: understand your tools, respect the process, solve the problems in front of you, and turn an idea into something real. I wasn't ready to stop making things. I just needed to find a new way to do it.

The Little Girl Behind the Name
I wasn't the only one looking ahead. When my oldest daughter was just four, she became convinced that 3D printing was the answer. For nearly two years, she kept asking me to get a printer. She saw possibilities in it, and she wasn't about to let me forget them.
Around the time that idea first took hold, I had a newborn daughter named Indigo. I wanted both girls to have a place in whatever I built: one who inspired the dream, and one who would grow up part of it. That's how Indigo Inkworks got its name. What started as a plan for a new career became something much more personal: a family business our children can watch grow, contribute to, and perhaps one day call their own. And after all that time of my daughter insisting that 3D printing was the answer, here we are, running with it. Turns out, she was right all along.

Building Something Together
Along the way, my fiancée, Sabrina, and I found a dream we could share. We're both giving people. Helping others and contributing to our community have always mattered to us, but we also know how hard it can be to keep giving when you're working just to stay ahead of everyday expenses. We wanted to build something of our own that could bring stability to our family without losing sight of those values. We set out looking for self-sufficiency, and somewhere along the way we fell in love with the process itself. The machines, materials, design challenges, failures, and satisfaction of holding something that began as an idea. Sabrina and I came into this with scars and lessons learned the hard way. Life hasn't exactly slowed down since we met. We've faced chaos, difficult days, and challenges neither of us saw coming. But we keep coming back to the table, choosing to work through things, learn from each other, and keep going. We're taking the good, the bad, the mistakes, and the second chances, and putting what we've learned toward building something lasting. We don't promise perfection. We promise to show up, listen, solve problems, and put genuine care into what we make. When someone trusts us with an idea or an order, we take that seriously. If something doesn't work the first time, we'll keep learning and working to make it better. That's the same determination we bring to each other, and the standard we want to bring to our customers.

More Than Just 3D Printing
Indigo Inkworks brings old-school manufacturing experience together with modern technology and creativity. We design and make sensory fidgets, personalized gifts, functional tools, organizers, wall art, and pieces for fantasy and cosplay. We're especially interested in specialty and obsolete parts: the little broken or missing thing that can make an otherwise useful item hard to use. Some ideas are playful. Others solve everyday problems. We still get excited when a new idea takes shape. Sometimes someone knows exactly what they need, and sometimes they only know what isn't working. We enjoy both kinds of challenges. Whether we're recreating a hard-to-find component, improving a tool, or bringing a personal idea to life, we want the finished piece to feel considered, not simply printed. We're not trying to be a faceless factory turning out thousands of identical objects. We want to remain the kind of shop where creativity matters, quality matters, and the people doing the work care about the people receiving it.

Our Future, One Print at a Time
Indigo Inkworks is still growing, and so are we. We hope this business will provide more than an income: a dependable future for our family, room to help our community, and an example for our children of what patience, imagination, hard work, and persistence can accomplish. We don't know exactly where this journey will take us, but we know why we started.
From our family to yours, thank you for being part of our story.
